Anaesthesia and Ect

چکیده
Literature analysis What does the literature say about the selection of an induction agent for ECT? It is in fact a very difficult question since most of the studies are of limited benefit because of their study design in terms of outcome measurements. While seizure duration is helpful, it is by no means the best measure of ECT outcomes. Another problem is that most studies use methohexitone as the “gold standard” study drugas it is still widely used in the US, but not readily available in Australia.

Aim and Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is considered as the most effective treatment method for major depression and psychiatric disorders. Significant hemodynamic changes occur in patients treated with ECT and the duration of seizure after ECT is considered as an important factor in the success of this treatment method. This study aimed to compare the effect of etomidate and prop...

train-of-four on a peripheral nerve stimulator and sustained head lifting. General anaesthesia for ECT has three main functions: lack of awareness of the therapy; modification of the motor effects of the fit to prevent injury; fast recovery of reflexes and consciousness enabling early airway protection. Suxamethonium is the best neuromuscular blocking drug for ECT, because of its short duration...
متن کاملAnaesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy: An overview with an update on its role in potentiating electroconvulsive therapy
Despite advances in pharmacotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains a mainstay treatment option in psychiatry since its introduction in 1930s. It can be used primarily in severe illnesses when there is an urgent need for treatment or secondarily after failure or intolerance to pharmacotherapy. The 'unmodified' technique of ECT was practised initially, with a high incidence of musculosk...
متن کاملEffect of Ketamine, Thiopental and Ketamine-Thiopental Combination during Electroconvulsive Therapy for Depression.
OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the effect of anaesthesia with thiopental (4 mg kg(-1)), ketamine (1 mg kg(-1)) and ketamine-thiopental (1 mg kg(-1) and 4 mg kg(-1), respectively) combination during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and haemodynamic variables in patients with resistant major depression. METH...
متن کاملBilateral bispectral index monitoring during and after electroconvulsive therapy compared with magnetic seizure therapy for treatment-resistant depression.
BACKGROUND Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective and established treatment for depression. Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) has recently been developed and seems equally effective while associated with fewer side-effects. Both require general anaesthesia, which could be quantified using the bispectral index (BIS). We compared ECT and MST with respect to recovery times, left-sided ...
متن کاملAtropine premedication and the cardiovascular response to electroconvulsive therapy.
A report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommended avoiding atropine premedication during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). We have examined the cardiovascular effects of ECT with or without atropine premedication. Consenting patients (n = 30) were allocated randomly before their third ECT session to receive atropine or no premedication. The rate pressure product (RPP) was recorded befor...
